Interview with Yoon Sangmin 

(Sisa Magazine No. 245 = Painter Hong-Gyu Cha) Yoon Sang-min made a friend request to the author on Facebook, and found out that his career was quite different from other authors. He graduated from Catholic medical school and worked as a specialist in otorhinolaryngology and then transformed into a photographer.

Even now, I agree with the enthusiasm that I live as a doctor, but I completely organize my medical profession and work only as a photographer. Yoon is a great photographer who is recognized for his skills enough to be invited to solo exhibitions twice at the Dream Stage, a world-class photographers gallery, Darkroom Gallery, and he has three books on photography. As the same artist, I first asked what I was curious about.

Your childhood dreams?

When I was in elementary school, my dream was to become a scientist. At that time, I was remembered as a cartoon, Li-Fi, and I was very intoxicated, and in the world of comics, a scientist who created something new looked good with a young heart. Unlike my childhood dream, I have lived as a doctor, but I think I have created a new camera technique that expresses like a picture after having a desire to create something new like a scientist.

Unlike ordinary photographers, Yoon is working on special photography that is indistinguishable from paintings. What do you think?

While working on photography, one day, I unintentionally found a wrong picture that was expressed like a painting. At that moment, I remembered the shocking emotion of seeing the picture of Vincent Van Gogh's tree rising up alive and rising into the sky, which I had seen on my childhood calendar, and I thought that if I purposely refined the wrongly shot image, I would be able to create a lively photographic work. . From then on, by deliberately manipulating the taboo camera movement and continuing the experiment to trace the wrong picture back, the picture of the day was born. The appearance of many trees as the subject of my work is also the result of the shocking impression of Gogh's paintings.

There are some people wondering whether Yoon's photo work is more like a picture than a picture, and can only be done with a pure camera. What do you think?

To start with, I don't do any computer work other than pure camera work. It's just a bit of color and contrast adjustments in Photoshop. There are also pictures that give a pictorial feel by compositing pictures through multi-shooting or computer work, but these pictures are distinctly different and distinct from the pictures taken with the new technique I invented.

Didn't there be any pictures that were expressed like pictures?

Although there are not many before, there have been photographs that express like pictures using camera movements, but few have been introduced in Korea. Existing photographs have a flat, pictorial expression, but the big difference is that photographs taken with the technique I invented are expressed in three dimensions. In other words, because'existing photography is a shooting method that uses the straightness of light', it is an image that is created by a single time zone, so it has no choice but to be a plain expression.

However, in the photo I created, a straight line of light causes diffraction, refraction, and reflection inside the camera to create an image by overlapping numerous lights of different time zones, just like painting over a picture. It becomes a transformed three-dimensional expression. To promote these differences, three photo books were published.

Is there another artist who is active as a “three-dimensional expression method” that artist Yoon does, and what camera does artist Yoon use?

I know that I'm the only one in the world who works with my own method of filming. This is because they are creating and filming a new technology by themselves. There are a lot of people who take pictures that are made by synthesizing pictures through computer work, and that are expressed like pictures through image composition with multiple exposures and multiple shots. However, I have not yet found a picture that is taken with a general camera and expressed in three dimensions like a picture. It is clearly distinguished from photographs synthesized by computer work and photographs made by multi-shot.

The reason for mentioning that a general camera was used here is that some people make their own cameras to shoot, while others make their own cameras that use a specially designed camera to enable multi-shooting. This is because some people use specially designed cameras. The camera I'm using is an ordinary camera that is generally used.

The representative person who works with his own camera is Susan Burnstine, a world-renowned artist who mainly works on dreamy black and white photography. After I published my first book, Photography from the Future in 2016, I was able to do my first exhibition in my life (Darkroom gallery, Vermont, USA 2017. 1. 05-1. 27.) in the US gallery before Korea. She is also a writer who likes my works.

I don't know if it's a stupid question because I don't know it, but there are many pictures of artist Yoon Sang-min's work that are expressed like dreamlike paintings. What is the difference between Susan Burnstine and Yoon's work?

I am not in a position to evaluate the works of world famous artists, but Susan Burnstine's photos I saw are characterized by her dreamy black and white photography. I started photography from the desire to express a lively expression like Vincent Van Gogh's paintings, so I did a lot of work in my early days, but while working on it, I also worked on photos with a subtle and peaceful atmosphere like Monet's paintings. There are also many pictures that give a dreamy feeling. I think how it differs is a part that the viewer should evaluate. If you go to Susan Burnstine's homepage, you can see the history and work, so it would be nice to refer to it.

If you have any difficulties or anecdotes while working on photography, please introduce them.

I didn't have any special difficulties, but sometimes I am mistaken as a strange person. When I work on photography, I shoot the same subject at the same place and at about the same time every day. The reason is that comparative data could only be obtained by working on the same subject at the same place and time.

While filming a tree in a temple, the police inspected it. On the surface, it appeared to have been checked by accident, but in fact, it was an incident that occurred when a strange person at the temple reported that there was a strange person taking pictures of the same tree at a certain time every day.

In addition, there was a thing that made me feel uncomfortable with my son because of my photography work. After a long time with my son living in the U.S., I went to an American camping site, but while I was sleeping, I suddenly came up with a new idea about photography. It was meaningless, and my son was angry, so he stopped his travels and returned.

By nature, if you are immersed in one thing, you forget the other. I even forget to eat. When you're immersed, you don't feel hungry, so you don't notice the passing of time. Even now, it is very common to realize that time has passed when you are not aware of the passing of time when working on pictures in the mountains, but only when the camera battery is completely depleted.

He served as a professor of otolaryngology at a Catholic medical school, appeared on TV several times related to otolaryngology diseases, conducted a fixed radio program for health counseling for a long time, and wrote a lot about medicine in various newspapers. Is there a reason to focus solely on photography?

At the end of January next year, I will hand over the hospital to a junior otolaryngologist who will complete the examination by a specialist and focus on photography only. While opening the otolaryngology clinic, 4 days a week, I have been working on photography for the remaining 3 days, but I think the time for photography is too short. Then one day, there was a big accident where I was collided behind my car by a heavy truck driving drowsy on the highway where I was going home from taking pictures. At the time, the car was damaged so much that it was scrapped, and I lost consciousness for a moment, but fortunately there were no major injuries.

When I thought about the reason for surviving in a situation where I was going to lose my life, I thought that there was still something left to do in the world, so I gave me more opportunities. Since I had lived as a doctor, I thought I wanted to live as a photographer.

If you studied photography on your own and you are working alone, you will not have many opportunities for exhibitions. How do you do photography activities like exhibitions?

In fact, exhibitions are the most difficult problem for me who work alone. In Korea, it was not easy to participate in domestic exhibitions because the pictures that are expressed like pictures are not well introduced. So, while I was thinking about exhibiting at an American gallery, I got a call from the Darkroom gallery (Vermont, U.S.A.). I was going to exhibit it under the theme of a dream, but I was asked to send a few pictures of myself. Darkroom Gallery, USA). At the time, the chairman of the jury was Susan Burnstine, a world-renowned photographer. Thankfully, after last year, it was decided to hold an invitational exhibition (joint) at the Dark Room Gallery in the United States again this year at the recommendation of the artist Wendi Schneider.

Since the 2017 U.S. exhibition, we have held two solo exhibitions (Gyeongin Museum of Art, Seoul) in Korea, and two international photography exhibitions (2018 KUCA, Kiev, Ukraine, Florence, Italy, joint exhibition) and two international art fairs (Busan International Art Fair, Korea International Art Fair (KIAF) and several times have come to the opportunity to jointly exhibit in Korea.

If you define a picture in a word?

I want to say that photography is an art of light accompanied by imagination. A photographic work that lacks imagination becomes lazy and inertia and cannot express a new image.

Future plans?

The Darkroom Gallery (Vermont, U.S.A.), which held the first exhibition in his life for free in 2017, is planning to do a free exhibition again this year (July 25th-September 2nd, 2018). In addition, the Korea-China Art Association National Assembly Invitational Exhibition (2018. 8. 28.-8. 30. National Assembly Hall 2nd floor) and KIAF 2018 (Korea International Art Fair, COEX, Seoul, Korea. 10. 4.-10. 7.) Is scheduled.

I am interested in black and white photography, so I am currently working on black and white photography. Black and white photos look simple and not flashy, but they are attractive because they have a sense of weight. In the future, they plan to show black and white photos at the exhibition.

I am transforming from a doctor to a photographer, and I ask an artist to say a word.

I respect artists who do the artistic activities they want to express in their own way despite difficult conditions. Despite the hardships of not being able to sell a single painting while Vincent Van Gogh was alive, he made many masterpieces in a short period of 10 years as a painter, and the contents of Vincent's letter conveying the pain he suffers from poverty and sickness to his younger brother Theo still eat my heart. Let's do it. That is why I admire other artists like Vincent Van Gogh that were hidden in this era.

In return for human harm to the environment, they are suffering from natural disasters such as heatwave, heavy snow, and heavy rain. As a photographer, please tell me your thoughts on preserving the environment.

It is thought that it is a good place to go into the mountains for photography and there is no trace of human beings, so when I work, I see the traces of humans remaining around without fail. I see things that cannot be assimilated with nature, such as plastic cans, confectionery packaging plastics, glass bottles, etc., remain vivid as if they were left yesterday even after a long time. Of the countless things that make up the earth, I have the heart that if I forget that one of the weakest beings is humans, we will respect nature a little more. Thinking about nature is also a habit. I have enjoyed mountain biking for a long time, and I have the principle of not leaving contaminants in the mountains. Nature love is difficult to start with, but it becomes a habit after a few times.

As a photographer, I want to convey vividly about the damage caused by environmental pollution caused by plastic products, but it is regrettable that I cannot do that due to the nature of my photographs. Because loving nature is not for others, but in the end, it is to love yourself.

Just as death is a part of life and another change in life, a straight line of light from the camera causes the shedding of light or mixing of colors due to changes in diffraction, refraction, amplification, etc. It is the intention of artist Yoon Sang-min's work to express her feelings. The shedding of light and the ambiguity of coloring are another language and aesthetic message of the artist who expresses her work.

Light is the result of the sun's exercise of love. A dream is born when the light is captured in the lens of the camera through the pain of separation from the sun. Artist Yoon is an artist who creates images of dreams by touching the heart of the camera with her eyes armed with patience and her loving fingertips. And in his photos, you can feel love, patience, and peace. This may be because artist Yoon Sang-min works with a dream for Vincent van Gogh and Monet.

Far from being tired even after long interviews, being excited in a dream like a boy is probably because it was assimilated into the passion of the Yoon artist. This evening, after a long time, I'm going to go to a wine bar and have a good drink.
